The Bench

This is the new bench that the City of Devonport Lions Club was responsible for, on the corner of Lovett Street and Valley Road. Many pensioners who live at Karingle walk to the Valley Road Medical Clinic and this gives them a slot to rest half way. Lion Hos Koerner pretty much arranged this project by himself!

Over 90s Party 2009

Sunday, 8th November 2009 our club transported and served over thirty local citizens over the age of 90 at the Annual Christmas Party. The event was run in conjunction with the Tasmania Day '09 Celebration. The choir was in usual grand form and a fun time was had by all. There were two 99 year olds in attendance, and they both promised to be back next year!

Contributors Wanted

Come on Lions, if you attend an activity, make sure it doesn’t go unnoticed and place a brief description on this website! Easy as 3.1415, all you need to do is email your story to news AT devonportlions.info or pass it to Lion Walter. How can we hope to get our activities published in the local paper if we cant even report them to ourselves! Currently we need:
  • a photo and a few words on the new bench located somewhere between Karingle and Valley Road Medical Centre for the elderly to sit on and rest as they commute.
  • a picture of the new Skate Park which was seeded by our Lions Club with $20K! Since we had a major part to play in it’s new incarnation we need someone to chronicle the events.
  • a photo and a small article on the Over 90s party we hosted last weekend.

Reminders!

We need to decide on doing the Orana Luncheon on the 21st of March or the 23rd of August, or both. We are no longer allowed to provide the food for the occasion and this now makes it a relatively easy and fun task.
  • We need to have ideas for a float for the Christmas Parade on December 17, which is followed by our annual Candles by Candlelight at the Bluff! A committee has been formed!
  • Water is going to flow over the Spirit of the Sea ‘Water Feature’ as of next week! We expect a photo and a story from anyone who will witness this event! Next we need to install a bench there for the elderly who make the hike out to the platform.
  • Spreyton Racegates on 15 December: John M, George R, Jay M and Garry P will be volunteering at the gates!

Why not complete a survey!

Sue Brereton is doing a course in Applied Social Science and one of her assignments is on Volunteering. If you have the time, would you be so kind as to complete he survey at the link below. The information and data gained will be used for no other purpose than to write my case study for her course.

If you volunteer with a number of organisations it will only let you do the survey once so choose which organisation you wish to complete it for. Thank you very much in anticipation of your help

Magic Show 2009

Headed by Michael Boyd the annual Magic Show was another great success this year!

We entertained hundreds of children and special needs adults all supported by our own community. The way it works is that businesses buy the tickets for the show and we distribute them in the community to people we deem need a little magic!

These are some of the smiley faces going in for smoke and mirror entertainment.

A special foreword was given by our City of Devonport Lions club's president Lion Jim Pearson, urging attendees to thank the individual sponsors personally.

Youth and Family Focus Inc

Adelle Rist from Youth and Family Focus Inc was a guest-speaker today and she brought along one of her contracted facilitators; Allison Davies a Music Therapist.

Youth & Family Focus Inc. (YAFF) is a community based Not for Profit organisation located in Devonport which facilitates a range of services to the North West Coast of Tasmania. They offer assistance with accommodation and transitional support for youth in the community that do not get adequate support and care at home. YAFF is primarily funded by the National Illicit Drug Strategy, and the services are typically free and confidential. YAFF has access to an extensive network of specialists ranging from detox centres, to the education department, schools, mental health, and social workers. Adelle herself is a trained Youth Alcohol and Drug education worker, and does group work at 'The Zone' in town. The Zone acts as an alternate education venue for youth that do not work well in the standard school environments, and other young people that need support. Individual clients are often seen in the Red Brick building in Oldaker street where family and individual support is provided for health and drug related issues and more.

Another service Adele mentioned was the iparty II program which is an interactive alcohol, drug and sex education seminar held towards the end of the school year for Year 10 students in their schools. It teaches students in their own 'language' to make good choices, and to allay fears of calling ambulance or police when necessary.

Allison Davies enlightened us on Music Therapy. She completed a combined Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching at the University of New England and a Master of Music Therapy at the University of Queensland. She provides musical intervention with the aim of therapeutic outcomes. She does this through lyric analysis, song and dance and other music related activities. She has worked with people ranging from pre-birth to 107 years of age. She conducts anger management courses for 13-17 year old boys and self esteem classes with girls in the same age bracket. Both with the intention of crime prevention. As all teenagers like music, music being a form of self expression and identity, she is able to provide therapy through implementation of music and musical instruments. Music is not seen a s a threatening media, especially by easily intimidated youth or psychiatric patients. Music enables Allison to loosen tongues and hence discuss deep issues that are hard to talk about. Drumming for instance is a great instrument for self expression when people refuse to talk, it releases pent up energy and brings out repressed emotions, resulting in the subjects feeling much relieved at the end of each session with Allison.

Six nursing homes in the North West now have a regular music therapy program. In the elderly it can stimulate memory retention and recall, but her therapy also has therapeutic benefits to people with autism, Down Syndrome, victims of sexual abuse, but also in children's wards and burns units in hospitals. It was a very interesting topic to learn about.

Deloraine Community Bank

Lynn Haywood (pictured above on the left with Lion Jennifer) from Meander Valley Financial Services Ltd. came to speak to us today about the Deloraine & Districts Community Bank® Branch. It is a most interesting concept where the Bendigo Bank franchises itself as a Community Bank run by the local community for the local community. Fifty percent of the profits are distributed back into the community. Currently there are about 250 such banks operating in Australia with about 20 added each year. Geeveston and Dover had the first Tasmanian branches, closely followed by Swansea and Bicheno and the Deloraine branch was officially opened on 27 July 2005. Typically the banks provides standard banking services including personal, business and housing loans.

Each branch has to conform to all the usual financial institution requirements which includes being listed as a public company on the stock exchange, shareholders and the payment of dividends. Training of the people involved from Directors to staff is auspiced by the Bendigo Bank. In Deloraine they raised enough shares to even have their own ATM.

Community projects for the Deloraine & District branch includes the annual Deloraine fun-run. For more information please call into 49 Emu Bay Road, Deloraine or phone (03) 6362 4801 or click on the below links:

Zone Meeting at Port Sorell

Soroptimist Club Invitation

The local Soroptimist Club has invited anyone from our club who is interested, to hear a talk on the plight of many young girls in the Asian/Southeast Asian regions, namely being forced into Sex Slavery. The Soroptimist organization is promoting support for a program which aims to liberate many of these young girls who might otherwise be unjustly exploited.

Board Meeting

Board Members please remember that our next Board Meeting is Monday, 28 September (shortly after the PFD tear-down) at 1900.

Lions Club of City of Devonport PFD Support

Each year PFD sets up a food services exhibition at the Sports Centre on Forbes Street. It's an opportunity for distributors to show off their wares and services. And each year the Lions Club of City of Devonport sets up tables for the distributors use during the two day event, and at the end of the event they wipe down and take down the tables. For this service (hands on help and rental of the tables) our club receives $800. Please help with the set-up on Sunday, 27 September, 0900, and with the tear-down on Monday, 28 September, at 1700.

Citizen of the year 2009

Congratulations to Terry Matthews for taking away the Devonport Citizen of the Year award this year!

We had a well attended mixed night at The Gateway in Fenton street with about 60 people attending. Alderman and Lion Grant Goodwin presented Terry with his award.

Terry survived flying Dakota war-birds for three and a half years in WWII and came back to become a builder apprentice with Jeff Harris Constructions where he learned the ins and outs of construction and engineering through some major projects such as the Edgel vegetable processing plant. Now of course we all know him as Terry from Matthews Constructions. Sticking to his philosophy of life (Health, Lifestyle and Money - in that order) Terry believes that a happy client will make money for the (building) consultant and that means a happy customer and a job well done. His health he attributes to luck, and with it he continues being active in the industry and his community, referring to Retirement as another dirty word. Congratulations Terry!

Did you recently sponsor a new member?

Sponsorship is an Important Responsibility. Lions Clubs International is a strong organization with a proud history of accomplishment. At the core of this success are dedicated club members who devote their time and attention to serving their communities. To continue to maintain the organization’s record of achievement all Lions in your club must attract and sponsor new club members.

A sponsor’s responsibilities do not end when a prospect is inducted as a member. Helping them
grow in the organization means they will stay a member. As a mentor you should:
  • Continue to introduce the new member to Lions they have not met, helping them feel part of the group.
  • Offer to accompany them to meetings. Stay in touch. Make sure that they are allowed to express their thoughts and ideas.
  • Serve as a source of inspiration and advice.
  • Encourage the Lion that you sponsored to be active and to live up to the Lions’ motto
Here is the brochure on Sponsors Responsibilities <click>.

Acknowledgment of 50 years of service

Last night, on Friday 11 September the Mayor Ald. Lynn Laycock hosted a Civic Reception at the Devonport Council Chambers in appreciation of 50 years of service to the community. It was well attended by the members as well as other VIPs from the area and the council. Pictured above is the Mayor with our Club President Jim Pearson on the left and Founding member George Russell smiling on the right. Most members continued festivities at La Porchetta around the corner!

Lion Mints

Lion Mints were established at the 1976 Melbourne Multiple District Convention. The idea wasbrought forward by the then International Representative, the late Lion Jim McLardie. District Governor Maurie Minervini of then District 201J introduced the project on behalf of Council to the tune of “The Candyman Can”. He urged the appointment of a Candyman in every club in every District. This project was seen as ideal a year round fund raiser and would allow Lions more time to work on local community projects, rather than numerous fund raising activities.

The funds available from the sale of Lion Mints over the years have been a great financial boost to the. Australia’s Paralympic athletes, the Australian Lions Childrens’ Mobility Foundation (the Hart Walker), the Lions Cord Blood and Childhood Cancer Research Foundations just to name a few.

Contact Brian Ralston to get a kit to place at your work!

Lions Christmas Cakes

Christmas Cakes are now available on consignment from the Miandetta shop (35 Berrigan Rd - phone 6424 3555). No need to pay up front, just pick up a box and put in a prominent public area at your work or at any attended reliable location where you can leave them. Cakes need to go out now!

The cakes, like the mints promote the Lions Clubs International organisation to the general public as well as raise significant funds for distribution by Lions Clubs to worthwhile service projects in local communities and other national and international Lions Clubs International programs.

Karina the Speech Pathologist

Karina Ives, Community Speech Pathologist from the NW area Health Services blessed us with her presence at tonight's meeting to tell us about the services she provides.
Although most of her work is from referred clients, anyone can contact her for help. The service is Government funded, and there is no cost to the public. She helps infants, teens and tweens up to the elderly living in aged facilities. Typically people she helps have a condition which may have caused them to loose speech or vocabulary, or lost the ability to swallow. The backgrounds of her patients include acquired brain injuries from accidents, congenital conditions, oxygen deprivation of the brain caused by drowning, stroke, drug overdoses, drowning, or any other causes. She helps people living with Parkinsons or Motor Neurone Disease, Huntington Syndrome, and other debilitating conditions.

Karina travels to her patients who live as far away as Queenstown and Smithton. Fortunately most of her patients are in the Devonport and Ulverstone region. Although we can visit her in the Steele Streety Health Centre she mostly does home visits and visits to nursing homes and hospitals.

Services closely related to her field are provided by the Talkback Association, the Stroke Foundation, Parkinson's Tasmania Inc, and Speech Pathology Australia. If you simply suffer from a dry mouth, check into Biotene for dry mouth relief, the world’s number one dentist and hygienist-recommended Dry Mouth product. (this was a message brought to you by the shameless commerce department).

Lion Walter---

Younger Members!

Tonight we inducted our latest member; Rebecca Beaton (see below). Although her true age shall not be revealed she is young enough to be the daughter of many of us. In fact she is. She is Gary's daughter (see resemblance below). Hence the respective emails for them will be gbeaton and rbeaton at devonportlions.info. She dived into the deep end and is seconded as the Secretary to the Taste of the Harvest Committee already. We are already proud of her just for making that commitment.

The guest-speaker today was Karina, a speech therapist from the North West region, see blog entry above!

Today's raffle run by Lyndon raffled off an entire salmon as the first prize. It was donated by Petuna, via John Tierney. There were four prizes in total and Jenny Rimmer almost won 3 of them. Fortunately she refused to accept and tickets were redrawn after she won the fish. Nonetheless we all thought there was something fishy going on and the word 'witch' was repeatedly uttered in the crowd.

Other items of interest were mentioned such as:
The Civic Reception hosted by our Mayor Ald. Lynn Laycock in appreciation of 50 years of service to the community; held at the Council Chambers from 6pm-730pm. Members and partners are invited, but please RSVP the receptionist by Friday 11 September (ph: 03 - 6424 0511)!

PFD Foodfair is on Sunday and Monday 27 and 28 September, and we are arranging volunteers to set up tables etc. on Sunday morning (9am) and pack them up again on the Monday.

The Magic Show is on soon, one of our major fund raisers of the year. We will need members to volunteer for the ushering. of all shows held on Monday 19 October.

The Imaginarium is running low on funds due to lack of government funding for Questacon which in turn will need to significantly increase the rental of their exhibitions. Any ideas to help the Imaginarium wrt funding or alternative science related displays are welcome!

We are manning the racegates again on Monday 21 September at Spreyton

Bill Slater is turning 80 shortly and we will have a party at Denise and Philip Gleeson's house for him at 4pm on Saturday 10 October. RSVP to Denise or Sam!

Zone Training day now 20 September - see the article <here>.

Citizen of the Year is coming up on September 24!

Sunday 27 September the council's Pioneer Park (Thomas St, East. Devonport between Wright St & Church St.) Playground Launch is on, and the City of Devonport Lions will do the cooking and serving of food and drinks from our caravan.

Penguin Training day date change

As you are all aware the Training day for Membership Chairpersons and committees was scheduled for Sunday the 6th of September [Fathers Day] This date was set due to the clashes of dates that the Regional Trainers had with other Lions associated committments.
It has now been rescheduled for Sunday the 20th of September.
Kind regards,

Serving Lunch at Orana

As the weather beats rain against our windows, Lions-club volunteers are serving lunch at the Orana Respite Centre. We do this twice a year to make a difference. The elderly folk really appreciate this social event and make a big effort to attend. Now that the food is supplied to us this event certainly rates as one of the most pleasant volunteering events on our calendar.

Old Time Music Hall 2009

It is Old Time Music Hall time in Sheffield, the Kentish Lions Club's main annual fundraiser. The City of Devonport Lions Club is of course keen to come and watch one of the packed shows, and will do so on Friday 28 August. The show consists of hilarious jokes, singing and dancing, and even an American sketch about a well hidden Indian Reservation in Kentish County complete with sheriffs, grey mares and maidens in distress.

The food was your typical country fair, complete with beef roast, baked and mashed potatoes, boiled vegies and a choice of ice-cream with tinned fruit or sticky date pudding with custard and cream for desert. All swallowed down with nice wine and beer, complimentary coffee and plenty of entertainment! All in all a highly recommended local experience!

New members!

Another new member! Dale Hawkens sponsored Barrie Cooper into the club, and he was invocated tonight by President Jim.

Megan Hogarth from the Advocate came along to witness our meeting and start planning articles on 50 years of service to the community. As you know we are celebrating 50 years of our City of Devonport Lions Club on the 13th of February next year. The 18th of September the Devonport City Council is inviting the club's members for a Civic Reception at the Council Chambers to acknowledge the contribution us Lions have made towards the city!

Megan, above, studied Journalism in Hobart with Lion Sam's daughter Lauren. Small world.

OVER 90s BIRTHDAY PARTY is coming up before you know it (November 8) and if you know of anyone over 90 in our community who needs to be invited contact over90@devonportlions.info ASAP.

DAFFODIL DAY is coming up on Friday 28th of August. It’s a day for all of us to give hope for a brighter, cancer-free future for ourselves, and for those we love. Daffodil Day merchandise is on sale throughout August, and you can donate to Daffodil Day at anytime. Check out the website: www.daffodilday.com.au.

Training Day Sunday 6 September

Please be advised that the first Training day for this Lions Year will be held at the Penguin Lions Centre, Iron Cliffe Rd., Penguin on Sunday 6th September 2009 starting at 9:30 am.

Subject matter: The roles of the Membership Chairman and Committee with in the club structure.

It has come to my notice that few clubs have an appreciation of what is expected of the committee and how it works and as a result our Region is leading by example by instigating a Training session.

A reply and numbers would be appreciated. If the numbers are more than the centre can accommodate then we will arrange for a larger venue like the penguin High School.

Kind regards,

John C Medwin "The Old Goat."
Regional Chairman [North West].

Lions Update

Did you know that 1015 new CLUBS were formed around the world in just the past 12 months? Surprised? Well we also added 42000 new members! Closer to home we have Noel Viney OAM (yes, yet another Lions member honoured with an OAM!) who was admitted into the Australian Lions Foundation Hall of Fame in recognition of his exceptional dedicated service to The Lions Clubs of Australia and Lions Clubs International. His comment: 'I was a little overwhelmed.'

Also, as a note of interest, the Lions Club of King Island is celebrating its 40th Charter Anniversary this month! They are celebrating this 1st of August at their Changeover Dinner at the Rocky Glen Retreat on King Island. Congratulations from the City of Devonport!

Membership Issues

Following today's meeting, and the article on membership procedures printed in our current Devon-Lion (read on line <here>) it appears there is still some controversy about membership procedures. Kaye Campbell will also raise this issue at the next zone meeting. I was very disappointed, and have been disappointed in the past, how when membership proposals are circulated amongst the members during a meeting they are not passed on and often disappear in one member's papers. This is disrespectful to the member nominated as well as to the member proposing the nomination. This has happened in the past. If a membership proposal is not passed-on to each other at the meeting the nomination will go to the board for approval assuming everyone has seen it. If no objections were received from members by the membership chair (Lion Walter) it is presumed to be circulated and passed by the members and only needs board approval.

If anyone likes to have a read of the Administration Manual for Lions Clubs in Australia (2MB pdf file), it can be read on line <here>. Any feedback or corrections, opinions or feelings on this issue can be emailed to the MemberShip Chair.

Meeting notes!

Tonight's guest speaker was Stephen Hayes from the APEX Regatta Association. He was envious of our membership! The Regatta Association is formed for the one event, the annual Devonport Regatta (First Sunday in March). The Association is an affiliation of different clubs ranging from the Devonport Life Saving Club to the NW Power Boat Association and many others. They are typically struggling for finance and spend the year seeking grants and applying for public funding. It costs the Association more and more each year to run the event, currently costing $60-$70K. If they are washed out one year that could potentially wipe out the Association. Over the years the entry fees for the boats has increased and the prize money decreased. It is a great event and is an asset to our North West Coast.

This evening we were graced by Kaye Campbell from the Latrobe Lions Club who asked us if we had any questions or issues for her to raise at the upcoming zone meeting. She is our Zone Chairman and will represent us. Kaye also explained how the structure of Lions Clubs works and how people such as herself are also volunteers and are not paid a wage to fulfill these functions. She is modestly reimbursed for required travel. Like the rest of it she is Zone Chairman out of free will and does so as a volunteer! Have a look at this presentation <click>.

The structure of the Lions Club is as follows:

Club
Zone
Region
District (35 clubs and 1250 members or more)
Multiple District
International
Board of Directors

Also at our meeting, Geoff had plenty of fines to go around; complete with petty fines such as Lion Walter trying to pay for dinner with a beer cap.... We were reminded of the Music Hall night on Friday night the 21st of August, for which we have 18 seats (first in first served: contact Lion Garry Potter). If you can only go on a Saturday night then contact Kaye from the Latrobe Lions Club ASAP as they have some spare seats. Thye over 90s party is scheduled for November 8, if you know anyone over 90 who needs inviting please email the details to over90@devonportlions.info. September 24th is our Citizen of the Year award (if you like to nominate someone email citofyear@devonportlions.info).

Lions Jim Pearson and Bill Slater officially presented the Digital Chair Scale purchased by Baptcare (Karingal) with our club donation, during the 1st Year Celebration of the merging of Karingal with Baptcare. A placard was then attached citing the Lions Club of City of Devonport as the donor.

Lions Who Have Received Honours in the Queen's Birthday List 2009

http://www.lionsclubs.org.au/ooa/biographies/2009-birthday.php

Looks like 2009 was a year during which us Lions received ample recognition for our contributions to the community! I think we can all add one more name to that list!

Lion Walter OAM!

New Lions on board

Pictured above is Jennifer Barwick who officially became a Lion today! And pictured below is Justin Gossage who was also inducted today. It is great to see younger members joining our club.
We all feel that it is important to have a good mix of people in our Lions Club so as to represent the community that we serve, the city that we built, and the people we represent!

To make the above induction memorable we had Erica de Jong speak to us about her experience as a Youth of the Year winner of our club. She made it to the state finals in Hobart and made all of us, as well as her octarian pop very proud! To hear how much we mean to the young people involved in the Youth of the Year project made us very proud. Thank you Lion Robert for having made the 2009 quest a success for our City of Devonport Lions Club!

A reminder for the volunteers at the race-gates next Sunday, don't forget to check the local paper to find out the starting time of the first race of the day and be at the Spreyton race-course 90 minutes prior. This is what our club does to keep our member-ship costs down.

Also note to members, our change-over dinner will be held at The Gateway Hotel on Saturday 27 June, if you or your partner cannot make it please contact Gary Potter. It will be a fun night when we say goodbye to president Philip and hello to President elect Jim! We will also have distinguished guests join us in the celebration. As we will obviously not have a board meeting after this dinner we shall have that at Lion Jenny's house on 16 June at 730pm.

The Magic Show tickets will go on sale again in a few weeks time, watch out! Not sure what this is? Why not check photos of last year's event <here>.

PCYC has decided to hold a regular car-boot sale as a regular fundraiser for their organisation after their first sale last month was a success - despite the weather that prevailed! We trust it will become a regular Devonport community feature as Devonport really has nothing of its kind yet. Look for them on the Mersey foreshore the first Saturday morning of each month! And whilst we are talking about the PCYC, they are holding a Christmas in July dinner function with auction and raffle at the Axeman Hall of Fame on July 17. Tables of 10 are available for groups. If you have items suitable for fundraising please or like to get a ticket speak to Dale or call The Zone on 6423 4099.

Incoming Officers Training Day

Lions Jim Pearson, Jenny Rimmer, Robert Smith and Bill Slater attended a half day training course in Latrobe on 7 June in preparation for assuming their new roles as club officers for 2009-2010. The session was well attended and the instruction and cross-feed of information and ideas was most rewarding.
