The Lions Caravan

Our Caravan looks fantastic thanks to Lion Hos and his army of volunteer Lions (Lyndon, Geoff, Ian, Brian,..). Ready for another ten years worth of faithful service.

The tidy amount of $6600 has been spent on the refurbishment and we can again proudly use it for club purposes or rent it out to other organisations.

Over 90?

Who do you know who is over 90? As you know we host a special 'birthday' celebration every year for all residents who are over 90. The date is November 16 and if you have a name you like to add to our list email us: ninety@devonportlions.info.

It was Miss Molly Stevenson who tried to gain recognition for the over 90s during the 1988 Bicentennial Celebrations. She got no response from her letters written to organisations including the Council. The Lions took on the honour of hosting an annual party for there respected elderly citizens, which we traditionally hold on Victoria Parade, Latrobe, in association with the Lions Ladies and the Senior Citizens Club. If you feel this history is not factual please let me know on the above email!

Police & Community Youth Clubs (PCYC)

Inspector Bill Winwood from Burnie brought in his team of unmarked PCYC (Police Community Youth Club) officers to spread community awareness about the PCYC, or what we know as the old Police Boys' Club. One of the faces he brought along were our well known retired mare Peter Hollingworth who amongst many other worthwhile hats he wears is also the president of the Mersey PCYC. The main talk was delivered by Snr-Sgt Danny Russell who is passionate on the subject of youths.

Although we recognise the old Police Boys to traditionally operate from their own buildings, the Police Community Youth Clubs are now utilising existing infrastructure such as community sport-centres, gyms and public facilities. This has created the need for Mobile Activity Centers which roam to where they are needed, loaded full of useful equipment to conduct almost any kind of sports activities including basketball, volleyball, cricket, and baseball to name a few. There are four units operating throughout Tasmania shared between the 13 clubs within our state. It was noted that on a National basis the PCYC is a bigger movement then the Scouts, and that as such the resources are there to make a huge impact on our youth.

The PCYC seeks out problem cohorts and recruits young members in those areas, often trying to include the bullies. Well designed activities have shown to be highly effective in reducing bullying and criminal behaviour. Channeling the youths' energy into worthwhile activities and introducing them to SES and Army Reserves and other organisations where they can continue to flourish as young adults has been proven to not only reduce petty crime in communities, but also generate leadership in the community.

Over the years it has been difficult to find members of the public to volunteer with the organisation and Peter, Danny and Inspector Bill are currently on a publicity tour to foster interest in the community and recruit volunteers into their system. Lions Insurance

Did you know we have an insurance cover that covers our activities? If you need to know the ins and outs of what is and isn't covered it is wise to have a quick look at what is covered <here> or perhaps  download a Liability Certificate!

A special MD201 Insurance Committee exists especially to ensure we have the right cover for our activities. The committee was Established under the jurisdiction of the MD 201 Constitution and By-Laws, and they have the responsibility of advising the Council of Governors on a suitable insurance programme for the Lions Clubs in Australia, Papua New Guinea and Norfolk Island.

The Insurance Committee cannot stress too strongly that successful communication is very much a two-way traffic. If a query is not answered as promptly as it should be, or a claim appears to be slow in being settled, it is imperative that you contact a member of this Committee.

Their website is www.lionsinsurance.com.au.

Melissa Bailey's Power

At our last meeting of August we were graced with the presence of the radiant Melissa Bailey, the Latrobe's Council Environmental Health Officer. She had prepared an informative PowerPoint presentation which took us clearly through all her responsibilities, and there were a few of them! Her duties include regular inspections of commercial food premises, waste disposal sites, water quality testing, children immunisations and also to educate the public on these issues through forums and functions such as at our meeting.

She brought with her a print-out for all of us to keep with temporary food stall requirements which is particularly well timed now that we have just spend a lot of effort on our caravan which is often used for that purpose. We hope to find more informative speakers of Melissa's calibre!

National Tree Day at Bishton Creek.

G'day,

Sorry for the delay with this email. I would like to thank the people from the Lions Club who attended the National Tree Day working bee on the 27th July 2008.

Participants, Philip Gleeson; Jenny Rimmer and Hoss Koerner helped members of the Mersey Estuary Group plant 120 native plants at Bishton Creek that day.Afterwards, a bbq was enjoyed by all who attended plus a fellow who arrived late, Walter van Praag (thanks for the e-mail address, Walter). A great day was had by all and the weather made it even better (sunny and mild). We, the Mersey Estuary Group, hope there will be more opportunities in the future to do activities together to benefit both groups.

Thank you, Secretary, MEG
