Penguin Training day date change

As you are all aware the Training day for Membership Chairpersons and committees was scheduled for Sunday the 6th of September [Fathers Day] This date was set due to the clashes of dates that the Regional Trainers had with other Lions associated committments.
It has now been rescheduled for Sunday the 20th of September.
Kind regards,

John C Medwin "The Old Goat."
Lions District 201T1.

Serving Lunch at Orana

As the weather beats rain against our windows, Lions-club volunteers are serving lunch at the Orana Respite Centre. We do this twice a year to make a difference. The elderly folk really appreciate this social event and make a big effort to attend. Now that the food is supplied to us this event certainly rates as one of the most pleasant volunteering events on our calendar.

Old Time Music Hall 2009

It is Old Time Music Hall time in Sheffield, the Kentish Lions Club's main annual fundraiser. The City of Devonport Lions Club is of course keen to come and watch one of the packed shows, and will do so on Friday 28 August. The show consists of hilarious jokes, singing and dancing, and even an American sketch about a well hidden Indian Reservation in Kentish County complete with sheriffs, grey mares and maidens in distress.

The food was your typical country fair, complete with beef roast, baked and mashed potatoes, boiled vegies and a choice of ice-cream with tinned fruit or sticky date pudding with custard and cream for desert. All swallowed down with nice wine and beer, complimentary coffee and plenty of entertainment! All in all a highly recommended local experience!

New members!

Another new member! Dale Hawkens sponsored Barrie Cooper into the club, and he was invocated tonight by President Jim.

Megan Hogarth from the Advocate came along to witness our meeting and start planning articles on 50 years of service to the community. As you know we are celebrating 50 years of our City of Devonport Lions Club on the 13th of February next year. The 18th of September the Devonport City Council is inviting the club's members for a Civic Reception at the Council Chambers to acknowledge the contribution us Lions have made towards the city!

Megan, above, studied Journalism in Hobart with Lion Sam's daughter Lauren. Small world.

OVER 90s BIRTHDAY PARTY is coming up before you know it (November 8) and if you know of anyone over 90 in our community who needs to be invited contact over90@devonportlions.info ASAP.

DAFFODIL DAY is coming up on Friday 28th of August. It’s a day for all of us to give hope for a brighter, cancer-free future for ourselves, and for those we love. Daffodil Day merchandise is on sale throughout August, and you can donate to Daffodil Day at anytime. Check out the website: www.daffodilday.com.au.

Training Day Sunday 6 September

Please be advised that the first Training day for this Lions Year will be held at the Penguin Lions Centre, Iron Cliffe Rd., Penguin on Sunday 6th September 2009 starting at 9:30 am.

Subject matter: The roles of the Membership Chairman and Committee with in the club structure.

It has come to my notice that few clubs have an appreciation of what is expected of the committee and how it works and as a result our Region is leading by example by instigating a Training session.

A reply and numbers would be appreciated. If the numbers are more than the centre can accommodate then we will arrange for a larger venue like the penguin High School.

Kind regards,

John C Medwin "The Old Goat."
Regional Chairman [North West].
Lions District 201T1.

Lions Update

Did you know that 1015 new CLUBS were formed around the world in just the past 12 months? Surprised? Well we also added 42000 new members! Closer to home we have Noel Viney OAM (yes, yet another Lions member honoured with an OAM!) who was admitted into the Australian Lions Foundation Hall of Fame in recognition of his exceptional dedicated service to The Lions Clubs of Australia and Lions Clubs International. His comment: 'I was a little overwhelmed.'

Also, as a note of interest, the Lions Club of King Island is celebrating its 40th Charter Anniversary this month! They are celebrating this 1st of August at their Changeover Dinner at the Rocky Glen Retreat on King Island. Congratulations from the City of Devonport!
