The City of Devonport Lions Club organises an annual food and wine festival celebrating diversity and high quality produce from the North West region of Tasmania. Staged on the banks of the Mersey River in the centre of the city of Devonport. Held every second Sunday of March it is appropriately called ‘Taste the Harvest’. This year will mark the 9th consecutive Taste the Harvest as Tasmania’s key fruit and vegetable producers exhibit their products along with celebrity chefs and numerous cafes and restaurants in stalls set up on the lawn.
Catering for a wide variety of tastes, offerings typically included potato and vegetable dishes, venison, seafood, beef and lamb. Fresh berries and desserts are a popular repast and wonderful Tasmanian wine, beer, cheeses and quality coffee are there to accompany the other gourmet foods.
Listen to live entertainment ranging from rock and roll, country, jazz and folk to stand-up comedians as local celebrity chefs cook up a storm using products grown locally and share their expertise and ideas. Visitors are entertained everywhere they wander with music, singing and acting by artists from all over Tasmania.
The Harvest Celebration Dinner is the traditional Friday night start to the weekend, marking the beginning of the event. What better way to prepare for a day full of entertainment and good food than to indulge in the absolute best of the best. The 2009 dinner is held at Reece High School, featuring locally produced gourmet Tasmanian food and wines. The dinner sets the tone for the main event the following Sunday, giving the dinner guests a full day to recover from their indulgence.
The Taste the Harvest event is organised by a dedicated committee comprised of members of the City of Devonport Lion’s Club, who are supported by volunteers, Devonport City Council, Devonport City Promotions, TAPG, the Devonport branch of Soroptimists International, and the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industry and Water.
