Soroptimist Club Invitation
The local Soroptimist Club has invited anyone from our club who is interested, to hear a talk on the plight of many young girls in the Asian/Southeast Asian regions, namely being forced into Sex Slavery. The Soroptimist organization is promoting support for a program which aims to liberate many of these young girls who might otherwise be unjustly exploited.
Board Meeting
Board Members please remember that our next Board Meeting is Monday, 28 September (shortly after the PFD tear-down) at 1900.
Lions Club of City of Devonport PFD Support
Each year PFD sets up a food services exhibition at the Sports Centre on Forbes Street. It's an opportunity for distributors to show off their wares and services. And each year the Lions Club of City of Devonport sets up tables for the distributors use during the two day event, and at the end of the event they wipe down and take down the tables. For this service (hands on help and rental of the tables) our club receives $800. Please help with the set-up on Sunday, 27 September, 0900, and with the tear-down on Monday, 28 September, at 1700.
Citizen of the year 2009
Congratulations to Terry Matthews for taking away the Devonport Citizen of the Year award this year!
We had a well attended mixed night at The Gateway in Fenton street with about 60 people attending. Alderman and Lion Grant Goodwin presented Terry with his award.
Terry survived flying Dakota war-birds for three and a half years in WWII and came back to become a builder apprentice with Jeff Harris Constructions where he learned the ins and outs of construction and engineering through some major projects such as the Edgel vegetable processing plant. Now of course we all know him as Terry from Matthews Constructions. Sticking to his philosophy of life (Health, Lifestyle and Money - in that order) Terry believes that a happy client will make money for the (building) consultant and that means a happy customer and a job well done. His health he attributes to luck, and with it he continues being active in the industry and his community, referring to Retirement as another dirty word. Congratulations Terry!

Did you recently sponsor a new member?
Sponsorship is an Important Responsibility. Lions Clubs International is a strong organization with a proud history of accomplishment. At the core of this success are dedicated club members who devote their time and attention to serving their communities. To continue to maintain the organization’s record of achievement all Lions in your club must attract and sponsor new club members.
A sponsor’s responsibilities do not end when a prospect is inducted as a member. Helping them
grow in the organization means they will stay a member. As a mentor you should:
- Continue to introduce the new member to Lions they have not met, helping them feel part of the group.
- Offer to accompany them to meetings. Stay in touch. Make sure that they are allowed to express their thoughts and ideas.
- Serve as a source of inspiration and advice.
- Encourage the Lion that you sponsored to be active and to live up to the Lions’ motto
Here is the brochure on Sponsors Responsibilities <click>.

Acknowledgment of 50 years of service
Last night, on Friday 11 September the Mayor Ald. Lynn Laycock hosted a Civic Reception at the Devonport Council Chambers in appreciation of 50 years of service to the community. It was well attended by the members as well as other VIPs from the area and the council. Pictured above is the Mayor with our Club President Jim Pearson on the left and Founding member George Russell smiling on the right. Most members continued festivities at La Porchetta around the corner!
Lion Mints
Lion Mints were established at the 1976 Melbourne Multiple District Convention. The idea wasbrought forward by the then International Representative, the late Lion Jim McLardie. District Governor Maurie Minervini of then District 201J introduced the project on behalf of Council to the tune of “The Candyman Can”. He urged the appointment of a Candyman in every club in every District. This project was seen as ideal a year round fund raiser and would allow Lions more time to work on local community projects, rather than numerous fund raising activities.
The funds available from the sale of Lion Mints over the years have been a great financial boost to the. Australia’s Paralympic athletes, the Australian Lions Childrens’ Mobility Foundation (the Hart Walker), the Lions Cord Blood and Childhood Cancer Research Foundations just to name a few.
Contact Brian Ralston to get a kit to place at your work!
Lions Christmas Cakes
Christmas Cakes are now available on consignment from the Miandetta shop (35 Berrigan Rd - phone 6424 3555). No need to pay up front, just pick up a box and put in a prominent public area at your work or at any attended reliable location where you can leave them. Cakes need to go out now!
The cakes, like the mints promote the Lions Clubs International organisation to the general public as well as raise significant funds for distribution by Lions Clubs to worthwhile service projects in local communities and other national and international Lions Clubs International programs.
Karina the Speech Pathologist
Karina Ives, Community Speech Pathologist from the NW area Health Services blessed us with her presence at tonight's meeting to tell us about the services she provides.
Although most of her work is from referred clients, anyone can contact her for help. The service is Government funded, and there is no cost to the public. She helps infants, teens and tweens up to the elderly living in aged facilities. Typically people she helps have a condition which may have caused them to loose speech or vocabulary, or lost the ability to swallow. The backgrounds of her patients include acquired brain injuries from accidents, congenital conditions, oxygen deprivation of the brain caused by drowning, stroke, drug overdoses, drowning, or any other causes. She helps people living with Parkinsons or Motor Neurone Disease, Huntington Syndrome, and other debilitating conditions.

Karina travels to her patients who live as far away as Queenstown and Smithton. Fortunately most of her patients are in the Devonport and Ulverstone region. Although we can visit her in the Steele Streety Health Centre she mostly does home visits and visits to nursing homes and hospitals.
Services closely related to her field are provided by the Talkback Association, the Stroke Foundation, Parkinson's Tasmania Inc, and Speech Pathology Australia. If you simply suffer from a dry mouth, check into Biotene for dry mouth relief, the world’s number one dentist and hygienist-recommended Dry Mouth product. (this was a message brought to you by the shameless commerce department).

Younger Members!
Tonight we inducted our latest member; Rebecca Beaton (see below). Although her true age shall not be revealed she is young enough to be the daughter of many of us. In fact she is. She is Gary's daughter (see resemblance below). Hence the respective emails for them will be gbeaton and rbeaton at devonportlions.info. She dived into the deep end and is seconded as the Secretary to the Taste of the Harvest Committee already. We are already proud of her just for making that commitment.
The guest-speaker today was Karina, a speech therapist from the North West region, see blog entry above!
Today's raffle run by Lyndon raffled off an entire salmon as the first prize. It was donated by Petuna, via John Tierney. There were four prizes in total and Jenny Rimmer almost won 3 of them. Fortunately she refused to accept and tickets were redrawn after she won the fish. Nonetheless we all thought there was something fishy going on and the word 'witch' was repeatedly uttered in the crowd.
